OJ Simpson became famous by playing football. He also made much money as a Black actor in movies, commercials, and TV shows. In 1995, he was found not guilty of killing his ex-wife and her friend in a trial that many people watched in Los Angeles.
He died at the age of 76 on Wednesday because of cancer, according to his family’s social media post. They did not mention where he passed away.
The well-known case showed the differences between Black and white America. It found OJ Simpson not guilty but caused a lot of problems in his life. In 1997, another lawsuit by the victims’ families said he was responsible for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald L Goldman. They told him to pay $33.5 million. He didn’t pay much of the money, moved to Florida, and had a hard time starting over, taking care of his kids, and staying out of trouble.
In 2006, OJ Simpson sold a book called “If I Did It” and planned to do a TV interview where he would talk about a made-up version of the murders he said he didn’t do. People were furious about it, so the book and TV interview were canceled. But later on, Goldman’s family got the rights to the book, added more parts saying Simpson was guilty, and released it to the public.
In 2007, OJ Simpson was arrested for breaking into a hotel room in Las Vegas with some other guys. They took a lot of sports items that he said belonged to him. But in 2008, a jury said he was guilty of 12 crimes, like robbery with a weapon and kidnapping, after a trial that not many people saw. He was sent to prison in Nevada for 9 to 33 years. He only served the shortest time and got out in 2017.
Throughout the years, OJ Simpson’s story sparked many books, movies, discussions, and studies. People talked a lot about fairness, how different races get treated, and how famous people are seen in a country that loves success stories, especially from poor beginnings. However, the government also struggles with its conflicting ideas and beliefs.
