The nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards are out, and top contenders include Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, Lana Del Rey, boygenius, Miley Cyrus, Foo Fighters, and Arctic Monkeys.
Taylor Swift snagged six nominations, with her album “Midnights” in the running for Album of the Year. Her song “Anti-Hero” is nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, while her collaboration with Ice Spice on “Karma” is up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Swift, a 12-time Grammy winner, has previously clinched Album of the Year for “Fearless,” “1989,” and “Folklore.” If “Midnights” wins, she’ll be the first artist to secure Album of the Year four times.
SZA leads the pack with nine nominations. Her album, “SOS,” is nominated for Album of the Year, and her track “Kill Bill” is in the running for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Additionally, her collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers, “Ghost in the Machine,” is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Phoebe Bridgers herself received eight nominations, including seven for her contributions to boygenius. The group, which includes Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, saw their debut album, “The Record,” nominated for Album of the Year, and their song “Not Strong Enough” nominated for Record of the Year.
boygenius’ album “the record” is competing for Alternative Music Album of the Year, facing off against Arctic Monkeys’ “The Car,” Lana Del Rey’s “Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd,” Gorillaz’s “Cracker Island,” and PJ Harvey’s “I Inside the Old Year Dying.”
Olivia Rodrigo scored a total of six nominations, with her second album, “GUTS,” in the running for Album of the Year. Her song “Vampire” is nominated for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Notably, Rodrigo’s “Ballad of a Homeschool Girl” is also nominated for Best Rock Song, alongside tracks from The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, and Queens of the Stone Age.
Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus each earned six nominations, while Lana Del Rey is a contender in five categories. In the rock genre, Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, and Metallica secured three nominations each. Emerging country artist Zach Bryan also received three nominations.
Nominees for Best New Artist include Ice Spice, Noah Kahan, Gracie Abrams, and Fred Again.
Other notable contenders are Aphex Twin, up for Best Dance/Electronica Recording; Dolly Parton, nominated for Best Country Solo Pop Performance; Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, in the running for Best Americana Album; and Joni Mitchell, whose recent live set, “Joni Mitchell at Newport,” is vying for Best Folk Album. Notably, Jeff Mangum from Neutral Milk Hotel earned his first Grammy nomination for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.
On a different note, one genre that didn’t receive any recognition from the Recording Academy is K-pop, which did not secure a single nomination.
In its 66th year, the Grammys honor the top albums, songs, and music released from October 1st, 2022, to September 15th, 2023.
The 2024 Grammy Awards are set for February 4th, 2024, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+.
This year brings in fresh categories like Best Pop Dance Recording, Best Alternative Jazz Album, and Best African Music Performance. Changes also involve cutting down the number of nominees in the “Big Four” categories (Album, Record, Song, and Best New Artist) from ten to eight. About AI, only human creators can be submitted, nominate, or won a Grammy Award. Any work without human authorship is ineligible in all categories.
